About DKT Ethiopia
DKT Ethiopia is the leading provider of family planning and reproductive health products to the private sector in Ethiopia and, after the Government of Ethiopia, the single largest provider of these products in the country.
Active in Ethiopia since 1990, DKT Ethiopia has delivered more than 38 million couple years protection (CYP) over the life of the project through the consistent supply of high quality condoms, contraceptives and other health products in urban and rural areas.
The organization's salesforce of 42, of which six are women, routinely services more than 15,000 pharmaceutical and clinical outlets throughout the country. Tens of thousands more supermarkets, kiosks, hotels, and bars are reached with condom sales through the Young Marketers reseller network.
DKT Ethiopia is supported by a number of donors, including the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN), Department for International Development (DFID), UNFPA, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Micronutrient Initiative, and an anonymous donor.
Donor support allows DKT Ethiopia to sell products at subsidized prices, enabling the organization to avail products that would not otherwise be available through pure commercial channels (or at least not at the same scale and geographic distribution). Furthermore, because DKT Ethiopia sells rather than donates products - as most non-profits do - DKT Ethiopia is able to leverage efficiencies afforded by commercial distribution. Global experience also shows that consumers value - and are much more likely to use - products they purchase as opposed to those they receive for free. This is the core of social marketing.
In addition to procurement and distribution, DKT Ethiopia promotes its brands extensively through television, radio, and billboards as well as grassroots channels using point-of-purchase (POP) materials, product orientation, mass events and more. DKT Ethiopia's brands are among the most recognized in the country.
The organization's 616 billboards constitutes one of the largest outdoor media holdings in Ethiopia.
DKT Ethiopia also engages in mass education and behavior change campaigns designed to increase condom and family planning use throughout the country. DKT Ethiopia's Wise-Up Program (Wise-Up) is one of the longest-standing HIV-prevention campaigns in the country. DKT Ethiopia's new flagship project targeting rural areas - The Lekie Project - is quickly gaining recognition as a valuable partner in underserved rural areas.

Social marketing is the use of commercial infrastructure - brands, pricing, distribution networks - combined with philanthropic funds to make available products at a scale that would not be possible through purely commercial channels. Put another way, social marketing ensures socially desirable products are available even without the sole motivation of profit.
DKT International, DKT Ethiopia's parent company, is a pioneer in social marketing and one of the largest private providers of contraceptives and family planning services in the developing world. In 2015, DKT served 30 million couples, preventing over 5 million unwanted pregnancies, 13,694 maternal deaths, and 2.6 million abortions
