YOUNG MARKETERS THAILAND EXPSOURE VISIT WINNERS SELECTED
They came from all over Ethiopia, but in the end, only five could be selected to travel to Thailand as part of DKT Ethiopia’s (DKT/E) Thailand exposure visit for Young Marketers.
The winners, from as far away as Assosa in Benishangul-Gumuz and Dire Dawa, are now looking forward to an eye-opening exchange to the Southeast Asian country.
“I am very happy. Until now, I have only heard the name of Thailand,” said Aregahegn Bekele, a Young Marketer from Nekempte, Oromia, who will be making the journey.
“I’m looking forward to observing condom manufacturing firsthand and then sharing it with my club back home.”
The five Young Marketers will travel to Bangkok in February 2014. They will be accompanied by Samuel Alemu, a journalist from The Ethiopian Herald, as well as staff from DKT/E.
All travelers, including Ato Samuel, were selected by lottery at a ceremony at the Desalegn Hotel on January 9. The ceremony, attended by Ato Alemu Anno, Director of Multi-Sectoral Response Coordination Directorate at HAPCO, as well as dignitaries from USAID and the Ethiopian media, was a welcome recognition for The Young Marketers (YM) Initiative, which has grown to play a key role in condom distribution in Ethiopia.
“In 2013, YM clubs distributed nearly 25 million condoms, generating revenue of USD 100,000 for themselves and their clubs,” said Andrew Piller, DKT/E’s Director, on the occasion.
The amount distributed by YM clubs is anywhere from 25 - 50% of all condoms distributed in Ethiopia.
DKT/E is one of the leading distributors of condoms and reproductive health commodities in Ethiopia. DKT/E regularly accounts for approximately one-third of couple years protection (CYP) in Ethiopia. The organization also has a number of project activities designed to increase access to contraception in rural areas and prevent HIV among high-risk groups.
