Implanon NXT – on-the-job training for private health providers
DKT is facilitating the rollout of a new contraceptive technology – Implanon NXT – through on-the-job training at private medium and specialized clinics throughout Ethiopia.
The training is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA). As per Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) guidelines, on-the-job training is a supplement to the standard 2-day training curriculum.
Recent activity
DKT nurses recently provided on-the-job training to providers in 80 private health facilities in Amhara. Most providers were already experienced in inserting and removing implants as well as being knowledgeable about FP counseling and infection prevention.
DKT’s on-the-job training thus focused primarily on developing skills on the Implanon NXT applicator.
In the coming months, DKT will expand Implanon NXT trainings to Oromiya, SNNP, and Tigray. DKT plans to train 200 providers from these regions in centralized group trainings, which will be followed by on-the-job trainings.
About Implanon NXT
Implanon NXT is a single rod, sub-dermal implant containing 68 mg of etonogestrel. Implanon NXT is pre-qualified by the World Health Organization, simplifying bulk procurement and import. It is highly effective – 99% for correct use – and lasts for up to three years. The product’s easy application reduces risk of infection, decreasing the need for more intensive training associated with traditional Implanon.
