Research sheds light on Ethiopia’s condom market

Original research by DKT Ethiopia points to the strength of the organization’s two brands – Sensation and Hiwot Trust – in the private sector in Ethiopia.

Over 90% of respondents in a 20-town survey of 1,100 current condom users are using a DKT brand condom. Among these, nearly three-fourths uses Sensation.

“Decreasing HIV-prevalence and large-scale public-sector provision has likely influenced condom consumption patterns,” says Negussie Gebretsadik, National Operations Director for DKT Ethiopia

“Our research helps us understand these trends and how best to contribute to the total condom market.”

The research will be finalized in the last quarter of 2016. In addition to interviews with current condom users, the research includes 20 focus group discussions and interviews with 60 key informants.

Key findings:

  • Over 90% of current condom users use Sensation or Hiwot Trust
  • Roughly three-fourths of DKT consumers use Sensation and one-fourth Hiwot Trust
  • Female sex workers are the largest users of non-DKT condoms
